I am James's ....
in Memory of
James Holmes
A devoted gran whose grandson died from a rare bone cancer is turning his bedroom into a club
for all his friends.
Pam Crowther said his friends were such a support to 20-year-old James Holmes as he battled
Ewing’s Sarcoma that now she wants to help them.
The 60-year-old. from Heights Lane. Eldwick. says her door will always be open to his pals to go and
meet up in his room and play the games and music they used to when he was alive.
Theyve been through it all with him. right up until the very end. Its difficult for them to
know how to grieve because they are so young but I want them to know Im here if they ever want to
talk and James.s room. Im doing it out for them so they can come and meet up, listen to music
and play his games. Hundreds of friends and family were expected to gather at Bingley Parish Church this morning to say
their farewells.
James. who chose his own headstone. was laid to rest wearing his Manchester United kit and with a
glass in one hand and a beer can in the other his friends also put in a copy of a lads magazine.
On top of his coffin will be a model of a boy on a motorbike made by his uncle James’s
off-road bike which he would ride up and down the lane and latterly just sit on was the only pain
relief he ever got. said Mrs CrowtherShe said James.s death had left a gaping hole in her heart and described him as her rod.
The former Beckfoot school pupil. who went to live with his nana when he was nine. had been her
carer after a motorbike crash left her disabled.
We looked after each other but James was my hands and my legs my absolute treasure.
We were incredibly close. He loved his cars anything with an engine and one of the last things
he said to me when he was struggling to speak was Nana. you and me in a Ferrari. she said.
It was on a family trip to Orlando seven years ago as sports-mad James and his nana were struggling
to get through a stadium turnstile that a man at the gate noticed the teenager had a bad swollen
knee he sent him to get it bandaged at first aid.
“The pain kept bothering him. we went to see the doctor at home but it as put down to growing
pains or the fact he was a footballer but eventually I knew something was wrong and got him seen
again. said Mrs Crowther.
Just hours after that appointment a letter was pushed through their letterbox saying the doctor
wanted to see them urgently.
At the surgery they were told to go to the A&E department at Airedale General Hospital immediately.
From there everything spiralled. he had test after test and then we were told it was cancer.
James was referred to the Young Oncology Unit at Christie.s Hospital in Manchester and in 2006 had
his entire knee replaced.
He went into remission for a few months but then it came back with a vengeance scans showed up
31 tumours in his lungs, a massive one next to his heart and two in his leg because of his
breathing difficulties he went on to suffer panic attacks.
It was after a severe attack at home that he was taken to Manorlands Hospice where he died on July
