I am Stephen's ....
Stephen Patrick David Gately has died whilst on holiday in Majorca with this long term partner, Andy
Cowles. The News of the World has reported than Stephen had gone out for drinks, returned to his
accommodation to sleep but never woke up.
Boyzone manager Louis Walsh told the newspaper: "We're all absolutely devastated."
He said: "I'm in complete shock. I was only with him on Monday at an awards ceremony. We don't know
much about what's happened yet.
"I only heard after The X Factor and we will rally around each other this week. He was a great
man."
Singer Sir Elton John said: "David and I are stunned by this tragedy. Stephen was the kindest,
gentlest soul.
"We send our love and condolences to his partner Andy and to all his friends everywhere."
The former Irish Prime Minister, Bertie Ahern, was quoted as saying:
"This is a huge tragedy. Stephen and Boyzone have been very much a part of our life for 15 years in
Ireland.
"They've done well around the world, but they are very much a group of lads from north Dublin.
"It's a huge loss. I extend my sympathy to the Gately family and all the lads in Boyzone."
Mr Ahern, whose daughter Georgina is married to Nicky Byrne of boyband Westlife, also told Sky News:
"It's a huge loss for all the supporters of Boyzone.
"They got back together, they've been doing really well. I was talking to Ronan (Keating) the other
night.
"They had a big year ahead. So its a huge personal tragedy to the Gatelys but also to the
entertainment and music industry."
Stephen sung in popular 90's boy band Boyzone from 1993-2000 and achieved 6 UK number one singles,
as well as countless top 40 hits.
He moved onto solo projects in 2000, releasing the album "New Beginning" which got to number three
in the UK album charts.
Stephen also tried his hand at acting, taking the lead role Andrew Lloyd Webbers"Joseph and the
Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat" and also appearing in performances such as Chitty Chitty Band Bang
in a London West End performance.
Stephen confirmed his sexuality as part of a front page Sun exclusive in 1999, with the headline
"Boyzone Stephen: I'm gay and I'm in love". It was reported that he feared a former member of the
Boyzone security team was about to sell the story.
In 2008 Boyzone briefly reformed, releasing a new single and booking several live performances.
His last message on Twitter, posted on 6 October, said: "still busy - lots going on. Focussing on
finishing my book next so may be quiet here".
God Bless Stephen Rip .Love Anne xx
